The June 2022 issue of the Japanese visual arts magazine Geijutsu Shincho (芸術新潮) is a special feature on renowned manga/concept artist Yamada Akihiro (山田章博), who bought us such amazing works like Record Of Lodoss War : Lady Of Pharis, The Twelve Kingdoms, RahXephon and more. The magazine takes a look back at his expansive portfolio of work that includes manga work as well as character design for games and animation, with a big feature on The Twelve Kingdoms. Also included are interviews with character designer Yutaka Izubuchi as well as Yamada Akihiro himself, plus a showcase on how he painted the cover art for the magazine.
Geijutsu Shincho magazine covers prominent manga creators from time to time, and has featured the work of Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo twice. Read my reviews here and here.
(above & below) Geijutsu Shincho has also uploaded a video of Yamada-san working on this cover piece, which is painted with a combination of mixed media including good old Copic markers and I believe poster color.
A beautiful collection of some of Yamada Akihiro’s most famous works; the cover art itself alone is almost worth the price of the magazine; highly recommended for fans of the artist. Do note that only about 1/2 of the magazine’s page count is dedicated to Yamada’s work; the rest are articles on other visual arts related news.

Availability : Because Geijutsu Shincho is a periodical, it is sold out very fast and will often be out of stock on Amazon Japan. Check back every once in a while to see if it is re-stocked, and my advice is to move fast when there are copies available !

You really have to check out his manga series Beast Of East. Its like 4 volumes at this point and is a real fully realized manga like the Loddoss one. But he has changed his art style up since then to more of a ligne claire type of thing. Still crazy detailed but he went a more stylized route than being realistic.
