Back in May this year I wrote about the AKIRA – The Architecture of Neo Tokyo exhibition put up by the author of the book Anime Architecture ( read my review here ), Stefan Riekeles. The exhibition showcased some very rare, original pieces of production background art used for the film; if you got to see it in person, I’m very envious indeed.
Anyway, along with the exhibition the organizer Riekeles Gallery also put up some high quality reproductions of the background pieces for sale ( not only from AKIRA but other anime films as well ), and recently there has been two new pieces added to the online store, the first been the piece used during the last shot of Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost In The Shell film, painted by Hiromasa Ogura ( above & below, partially cropped ).
There are 2 versions available; a numbered ( 50 pieces ) and signed solegraph as well as a 1000 piece lithograph. While I most certainly cannot afford the former, I’m hoping to save up enough cash to maybe get myself a copy of the lithograph version in the near future, that is if it doesn’t sell out before that.
The 2nd piece ( partially cropped, image below ), also available in the 2 editions I mentioned above is from the opening shot of AKIRA, a stunning vista shot of NeoTokyo just before it’s destruction.
Riekeles Gallery is really doing amazing work collaborating with the background artists in producing these high quality prints, and I hope more is on the way !. Head on down to Riekeles Gallery for more details.
I also highly recommend checking out Stefan Riekeles’ Anime Architecture book.

Very cool. Just ordered the poster versions of the Akira and Ghost in the Shell backgrounds you copied in your post above. The solegraph versions were a bit outside my budget ;-).
Glad they ship to the US.

Ugghhhh…..those AKIRA posters are killing me!! Why did I have to lose my job this year? I’m penniless. I can’t even afford the “cheaper” versions. I want all three so badly though. Wonder if they’ll still be around by the time I get some money together…

DISTRAKT – 100% !
Chris – Same here, going to go for the GITS and Akira lithograph versions !
Josh – I’m saving up for them too, definitely not cheap even for the lithograph versions plus shipping. There’s 1000 pieces so hopefully it won’t be soldout so quickly !

That’s really interesting about the Akira ‘cut 1’ piece and the shape being due to the panning. He did it in 2 1/2 days?! It would take me that long just to do one of the clouds.
We should all convince ourselves this is an investment. All art goes up hugely in value right?

March – I’m not even sure I can manage a cloud in 2 1/2 days haha. Not sure if it will make for a good investment, but it will definitely pretty up my wall. :}
