Ingres - Art Book Phaidon

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres ( 1780 – 1867 ) was a French painter and one of the most prominent artists from the Neoclassicism movement. This sturdy hardcover volume by Phaidon art books puts together a superb collection of Ingres’s paintings, all reproduced in stunning quality.

I remember Ingres (pronounced An-gra) vividly from my art student days not just for his mesmerizing art work but also because of the fierce rivalry with his artistic nemesis, the champion of the Romanticism movement Eugene Delacroix.

Neoclassicism valued purity and perfection of technical execution, form and composition, the antithesis of Romanticism, which extolled unbridled aesthetic experience and freedom of form. I find both movements equally fascinating and beautiful, with strengths of their own.

A spectacular reproduction of paintings by one of Neoclassicism’s most important artists. The book (hardcover) itself is sturdily bound and the paper quality thick and durable. My highest recommendations.
