A piece of conceptual artwork done for Freedom 4.
I love looking at concept art. They offer sneak peeks from behind the scenes, invaluable artwork that narrate the birth of characters and settings that are often presented in a much more detailed form than the finished product.
When I joined the Freedom Project team in November last year, I was handed thick volumes of concept and development art on my first day, which I pored through excitedly from cover to cover like a kid with a shiny new toy. Sure I’ve read many animation Art of books, but to receive one that I was actually involved in is quite a different experience. My respect for concept artists took on a whole different level.
There’s just so much unreleased artwork and concept sketches for Freedom, I really hope they’ll publish an Art of Freedom book when the series finishes.
I’m probably going to camp in the studio for a few days now – the schedule for Freedom 5 is just insane.

Oh wow! This is just so amazing! I LOVE looking at concept art and production designs and pretty much hunger to look at them, except that as a student I still don’t have the money to afford nearly all of them… having said that thank you so much for these two pictures. I really love how they point out every detail and in drawings like these the skill’s so good.
Good luck with Freedom 5! Nearly every anime production has a crunch period where people live in the studio for a while to finish everything, don’t they… But I’ve always wondered, do you guys have a bath in the studio or something? It must smell a bit after some time 😉

I agree totally with your comment about concept art and artists. These are the guys that create the vision out of nothing.
When I was in animation, I always preferred to look at the pencil animation reproductions rather than the finished cel work. The pencil drawing tended to show the animators thought process which I liked to study.

Do let me know if you want some Bak Kwa to complement your Nissin Cup Noodles. I will send some over.

w – Luckily for us, we have a public bath situated just nearby. :] Thank goodness.
Roy – My sentiments exactly. If a piece of cel work looks good when seen in playback, the animation test reproduction is going to twice as beautiful.
Zero – Very, very tempting. BTW I just read on Straits Times that Pacnet won the court case on the Odex saga. Seems like events are taking an interesting turn.

Thats some nice concept artwork. Concept art is important to production, it really helps the animators and CG fellas. It would be cool if there is a FREEDOM Artbook with all the concept art. I like pictures ^^
