I am all sorts of excited for the upcoming Japanese sci-fi animated film ALL YOU NEED IS KILL, adapted from Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s (桜坂洋) original novel, and produced by Warner Bros Japan, with animation by Studio 4°C. Check out the teaser trailer below –
The original novel was first adapted into the excellent 2014 live-action film re-titled as ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’, starring Tom Cruise/Emily Blunt and directed by Doug Liman. There is also a manga adaptation drawn by Death Note artist Takeshi Obata.
I’m really thrilled that the animation will be done by the renowned Studio 4°C, known for such amazing films like Mind Game, Tekkon Kinkreet and Children Of The Sea, just to name a few. The director is Kenichiro Akimoto, whose past films at Studio 4°C include Children Of The Sea and Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko. Also, while I have no proof if this, I suspect the background art might be handled by one of my favorite art directors, Kimura Shinji.
There’s no specific release date announced as yet, but feel free to follow the film’s social accounts below to keep up with any new updates –

I’m definitely curious about this one. It has an interesting look — character designs are unexpected, and they’re using some very vibrant colors at times. Interesting. Will check it out for sure.

Oh interesting.
When the trailers for “Edge of Tomorrow” first came out, I researched “All You Need Is Kill” but at the time, couldn’t find much info. I always wondered how the story might differ.
Plus, the style here seems fast and loose… kind of reminds me of FLCL.
Looks fun.

I’m really looking forward to this! I recently got a copy of Edge of Tomorrow from a thrift shop (honestly second hand stores are a great place to find blu-rays if you don’t have much money) and I was going to give it a watch soon. Have you read the original novel this was based on? I heard that was the big shortcoming of the live-action film, was that it had too Hollywoodized of an ending.
This looks great so far, I’ll try to see this in theatres if the Edmonton cinemas are screening it. My only concern may be with the CG. It’s hard to tell, especially with the rapid editing of the trailer, but I worry that there may be too much of a dependence on those elements for the machines in a way that isn’t fully integrated.

Chris – Yep, it’s really a fresh take totally different from the manga or film adaptation. Excited !
Scott – Oh yeah, maybe some of the animators who worked on this were involved in FLCL too ( just my guess ).
Coffee – I’ve read the manga, but not the actual novel. The film remake was probably to cater to a wider audience, I still like it !
Studio 4C have always been on the forefront of 2D/CG integration, I’m confident they will do a good job, but we’ll see i guess !
