One of my most hotly anticipated animated film releases of this year has got to be Wildwood by renowned stop-motion animation studio LAIKA. The studio’s unceasing dedication to artistic as well as technical excellence and innovation can clearly be felt in all their films, and it is one of the biggest reasons why I am such a big fan of the studio.
Wildwood won’t be released until November this year, but here’s the official trailer and some splendid making of featurettes that will surely whet your appetite. Check them out below –
While we’re talking about LAIKA, I will be re-miss not to mention the excellent art book ‘LAIKA: The Magic Behind a Stop-Motion Dream Factory‘, an in-depth volume that explores stunning work of the studio over the past 2 decades. Check out my review for the book here.
I will also be picking up the art book for Wildwood when it is released in October, so look out for my review then.

I am totally blown away by the work by the artists and technicians on this project. I think you missed one on the Laika channel…there was a cool bit about how one of the birds had attachable paper for smear frames for the quick flight that was really neat.
This will be a day one in theatres for me, and I will definitely buy the 4K steelbook when it comes out. (hopefully it will be released alongside Missing Link, which still isn’t available in 4K.)
Quick aside, I’m not sure how you feel about this. A part of me is slightly worried about the more naturalistic art style. While the film looks amazing, one of the things I’ve always loved about Laika’s designs was the exaggerated shape language. I hope that this film doesn’t mark a change in direction from the studio going forward. I actually think stylized designs would work so well with Piranesi and The Night Gardener, but we’ll see.
