The Art Of Kpop Demon Hunters

I’m sure the immensely popular Netflix/Sony animated film Kpop Demon Hunters need no introduction, and I’m very fortunate and proud to have been part of the animation/vfx team that worked on it.

Ever since the release of the film, the visdev ( visual development ) and concept artists have shared many of their amazing work on social media, and fans ( including myself ) have been hoping that Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation would release an art book, and this day has finally arrived; both digital and physical editions !

In fact, Netflix is particularly gracious and has released the entire digital version of the art book for viewing online at
( http://theartofkpopdemonhunters.com/ ); below are just a few selected pages from the book –

(above) A side by side comparison of the concept art piece painted by the visdev artists and the shot that I worked on ( lighting/compositing ) as it appears in the film.

(image below) A nice surprise from the art book is that Netflix has actually included the credits of the entire artist crew that worked on the film, which I was not expecting at all. The art/making of books usually only list the visdev artists, but it is generous of Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation to acknowledge us as part of the collective creative team that contributed to the making of the film.

I’m always excited to pick up any art/making of books for films that I’ve worked on, so Kpop Demon Hunters would be no exception. I’ll post my review of the physical art book when I get my hands on a copy in the coming weeks.

You can pre-order a copy here.

Next up on my wish-list ( and I reckon for many KPDH fans as well ), a 4K UHD physical media for the film, what do you think ? Granted it is a Netflix production, the chances are slim, but we have seen precedent before like for Guillermo Del Toro’s film such as Pinocchio. Fingers crossed on this one !

since you share your final shot(jinu) can you share on how many changes you’ve made base on notes given to you and who gives you notes on what needs to be change, is it more on technical?

anonymouse007 – The directors on the film were actually quite happy when I presented an early version of the shot, so it was really just minor tweaks in lighting to match up to the visdev piece, which we have to thank to really give us a good direction.
