Cover designs for Studio Ghibli’s anime blu-rays, adopting a simple, yet highly attractive mono color design with silhouetting for the title and lead character/characters. When the first design was released ( for Nausicaa, I believe ), I had assumed Ghibli will only be using this for its older catalogue titles, but it seems they’ve gone ahead and used it for a recent film Karigurashi no Arrietty as well. ( above )
Castle In The Sky ( Laputa )
Whisper Of The Heart ( Mimi o Sumaseba )
Nausicaa ( Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa )
My Neighbour The Yamadas ( Tonari no Yamada-kun )
Arrietty the Borrowers ( Karigurashi no Arriety )
It probably won’t be too hard to imagine what the designs for Mononoke Hime, My Neighbour Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service and Porco Rosso will turn out should they adhere to the same template, but I’m still itching to see them.
Sooner rather than later !

these are pretty sharp looking. i like when publishers conform to a single layout style for consecutive or related releases, whether they are books, records, or movies. Criterion does an excellent job of giving their releases uniformity while still playing with and respecting the individuality of the titles. i’m sure these won’t transfer over to the American Releases, but if there are English subtitles included, maybe it might be worth it to import them.

Yeah, I instantly thought of Criterion as well.
I think these are really nice covers and it’s good that Ghibli took advantage of their position and did something like this. Most would insist that the covers had more typical illustrations, since covers act as advertisements on the store shelves, but of course everyone knows these movies so it’s not necessary for them.

gon – Wow, that’s a pretty good one ! Consistent !
Zack/Jason – I’m pretty sure most of these have english subtitles. By the way, I love Criterion ! If only they release more films on blu-ray.

they’ve been doing a great job putting out everything new they do on blu-ray, plus they’ve been backing up a lot of goodies lately. i can’t wait for Kuroneko this October!
