I picked this one up during my recent time in Tokyo; the blu-ray edition of Kon Satoshi’s first animated feature film Perfect Blue. This is the regular edition with a standard blu-ray keepcase; there is also a limited edition that comes with the storyboard book, but since I already have the storyboards on a bigger format there was no need. Thankfully, the making of extras on both the regular and limited edition blu-rays are identical.
The video quality of the film is definitely an upgrade from the dvd version, but not quite as clean or sharp as Kon Satoshi’s later blu-ray releases for Tokyo Godfathers, Millenium Actress or Paprika.
Here’s the bad news; there are no English subtitles. This is consistent with the Japanese edition blu-rays for Millenium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers as well; it seems the publishers care very little for any potential market that might exist outside of the country.
All that said, this is still the best looking edition of the film that you can get at the time of writing. Perfect Blue is an astounding piece of work, a brilliant start to the short but spectacular career of the late Kon Satoshi.
