The Art And Making Of Pacific Rim Uprising Book Review

Pacific Rim Uprising is the 2018 sequel to the first Pacific Rim film released in 2013 , an unbridled cinematic celebration of the giant robots and kaiju genres, directed by non other than the amazing Guillermo del Toro ( Cronos, Shape Of Water, Pans Labyrinth ).

While the quality of the sequel did not reach the dizzying heights of the first film ( which in turn explains why I did not pick up this book immediately once it was released ), we’re ultimately still talking about giant monsters and robots, so I was fairly confident there would be cool art work in the book that I would enjoy, and I was right !

The art book features a very hearty serving of concept art ( approximately about 60% robots and 40% kaiju ), and is actually very light on on-set photography despite the title. It is debatable whether the robots and kaiju designs in Uprising look better or worse than the original, but the concept art pieces showcased is pretty extensive for all the ones that appeared in the movie.

I picked up this book during a sale on Amazon, and for the price I got it at was a pretty good deal. For those who are fans of the first Pacific Rim and/or are giant robot & Kaiju genre fans, there’s quite a good amount of cool art work and worth checking out.

I didn’t like UPRISING as much as the first PACIFIC RIM, but…I still watched it in the theater and had a good time. And there’s also the Easter Eggs of “Anaheim Electronics” building and the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam in the film, so that did bring a smile to my face.

The art in this book looks amazing. I have the “Art of” book for PACIFIC RIM, so I might pick this one up…

Marc – Same here ! It’s definitely not quite as good as the original, but there’s still good entertainment value in there. And you can’t go wrong with giant mechas fighting kaiju lol
