One of the most talked about movies this year, Godzilla Minus One is an excellent film not just because of the compelling narrative, but also because of the amazing visual effects created by the Japanese VFX studio Shirogumi, earning them an Academy Award nomination. TOHO has put together this 6 minute VFX making of clip with lots of interesting break-downs. Check it out below –
The clip is made with the average cinema goer in mind and doesn’t really get into the technical details of the actual VFX; this article below ( in Japanese language only ) goes a little more in-depth and talks about the use of Zbrush for the modeling of Godzilla –

I saw the movie on the big screen and was certainly entertained and also moved by the film; I’m definitely looking forward to picking up the movie when it is eventually released on home media, as well as (hopefully) an art book that would collect all of the concept art created for the film.

I never realized just how much of MINUS ONE’s VFX involved the use of “invisible” CGI…and just how well done it was.
Then again, Yamazaki being the VFX Supervisor and having experience in VFX certainly helped in the creation of MINUS ONE’s stunning VFX.

Marc – Yes ! VFX supervisors who also take on the role of director don’t always end well, but he did an amazing job.
