The Palace Of Versailles

Posted By yonghow on June 20th, 2012

Some pictures of Versailles Palace ( Château de Versailles ) from my Paris/London trip last year that I finally got around to editing. Looking at these photos I am reminded of just how astoundingly huge the entire palace was.

For some strange reason I was fascinated by the light and reflections falling on the weathered marble floor. Those tiles are probably hundreds of years old and must have seen their fair bit of history, Kings and Queens come and gone.

(above) A close-up picture of just one tiny patch of wall painting decorating the entire length of the hallway immediately above – and there were countless hallways just like that. Extravagantly ornate cannot even begin to describe the other-worldly richness of this place. Even a simple weathered window knob (below) seemed to be infused with tales of rich history.

(above) The black and white tiled floor at the Grand Trianon Castle – I quickly recognized it as the same location where photographer Annie Leibovitz shot her Vogue feature for Kirsten Dunst during the release of Sofia Coppola’s film Marie Antoinette.

Of all places the big expanse of greens surrounding the Grand Trianon and beyond I loved the most. The pristine quality of the light was unbelievable and the slow dancing of shadows cast by the foliage onto everything else was the most beautiful sight.

One is bedazzled by such an immense dose of art in one place. And to know that the history did not end with Marie Antoinette, I believe this is the same place where the treaty of Versailles was signed.
