In the city of Tono in Iwate, Japan, there lives an old man and his horse. Using no modern machinery of any kind, the old man relies on his horse to transport timber, just like in the olden days. But how long can the old man preserve this quaint way of life, with the city of Tono already fully modernized ?
This picture book is illustrated by the manga artist Daisuke Igarashi, who bought us the amazing Children Of The Sea comic which has been adapted into an anime film in 2019 by Studio 4C.
The prose is written by documentary director Yoshikiko Sumikawa, and the Japanese kanji comes with full furigana, which is great for learning Japanese.
I’ve always been a big fan of Daisuke Igarashi’s watercolor illustrations ( check out his art book Of Seamonsters And Souls ) and the art work in this picture book is just lovely. Highly recommended.
