I’m less than familiar with Square Enix’s Tactics Ogre roleplaying game, myself not much of a gamer these days but I couldn’t pass up such gorgeous art work –
The book is a veritable treasure trove of fantasy art work, cover to cover, by long time Square Enix character designer/illustrator Akihiko Yoshida and Tsubasa Masao. Don’t let the publishers hear this, but I was expecting a price tag of about 30-50% more for so splendid a collection of art work (231 pages), bound in a nice hard cover volume, no less.
Makes me want to play the game after seeing all these beautiful character designs. Any readers out there played this ?
(above) An interview with Masao-san, Akihiko’s interview is also in the book . (below) A rare glimpse of his work desk, at first glance I can see a partially hidden Hellboy comic and of course James Jean’s Fables.

I was hesitant to play the psp game but after seeing this, i really want to play it. I only played the snes versions and at that time it was japanese only so i couldn’t really get into the story but the art was already nice even for snes.

I’ve played the SNES and Gameboy versions. Don’t expect this art to be properly reflected in the game, which uses “super-deformed” sprites. Ahihiko’s work is uniformly excellent, and the best character artist at Square and Enix, in my opinion.
Know that Tactics Ogre are from the same director as Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, and Final Fantasy 12, which I think are 3 of the best games Square ever released.

the art is for the recent tactics ogre psp game. its a strategy rpg so the sprites are very small but the character art is showcased in the dialogue sequences.

I love the art of Akihhiko Yoshida since Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story (I’m getting super old). I will give it a try to this artbook and the other one of Braverly. Thanks for the reviews!

Picked up this book after playing the game (the PSP version that uses these assets) and seeing your review. As far as the game goes if you like turn based grid tactics this is the best I’ve ever found, by far. Nothing else even comes close. But then you’ve probably already played it looking at the date! Thank you for the peek at this wonderful art book. Both the game and art are truly masterpieces.
