Sumi (meaning “ink” in Japanese) is the companion art book to Vagabond manga artist Inoue Takehiko’s Water. Read the review for the book here.
Just as Water is dedicated to the artist’s watercolor works, Sumi is a collection of his monochrome illustrations done in ink. The books completely each other in style; the subdued and soft look of watercolor against the bold and energetic strokes of Japanese ink.
In the summer of 2008 Inoue collaborated with the Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo for the LAST Manga Exhibition, an amazing gallery of giant sized art works featuring the characters from Vagabond. It was one of the most fascinating art exihibitions I saw when living in Japan.
Like Water, the entire art book is free from text of any kind (save for a few parting words by the artist at the end of the book) and is packed with gorgeous artwork from cover to cover.

Both SUMI & WATER are simply gorgeous art books by one of the world’s most accomplished artists. He makes it seem so easy. I also love his character concept work for the Mistwalker Xbox 360 title LOST ODYSSEY… Highly recommended.
