Shohei 57577 is an art book by illustrator Shohei Otomo, the son of Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo. Using ballpoint pens as his primary tool, Shohei creates painstakingly detailed illustrations, with his subject matter often focusing on motifs of anti-establishment and satire of Japanese cultural icons.
Shohei’s work was also mentioned briefly in my book review for the Sousakuzine illustration magazine.
It must be hard walking in the shadows of so famous a father, but Shohei-san has certainly etched out a personal style of his own. Creating such detailed artwork must require quite a bit of time and effort; the volume runs fairly light at only 50 pages.
“Shohei 57577 Art Book” details :
– Dimensions – 12.3 x 8.8 x 0.6 inches
– Hardcover, 50 pages
– Black & White, book contains mostly images

What?? Otomo has a kid?? Jeez, I never knew that. You’re right…gotta be tought to attempt to be an artist in THAT shadow, arguably the second or third most famous manga artist of all time.
Would have been easier on him if he went into another profession, but hey…it looks like he’s actually got talent!
I can see why he’d want to be known simply as “Shohei” without attaching that famous name to his work. I’ll have to give this book a look…

Looks it runs in the family. Wild, energetic, subversive, and technically proficient works.
I think he’s carving out his own niche rather nicely. He could have aped his father and gone the manga route, try to throw his hat into the crowded violent sci-fi manga ring. Not that I wouldn’t want to see what he could do in manga form with this style and visual world he has created.
