Emma Sky (スカイエマ) is a Japanese illustrator based in Tokyo. I first featured her work in this issue of the Japanese magazine Illustrator. This is her first art book and contains about 150 pieces of her illustrations, many of them cover art for Japanese light novels.
Emma’s illustrations quickly caught my eye when I first saw them because her drawings are infused with a strong sense of spontaneous, frenetic energy that bring life to her characters. At times her style of drawing and usage of colors remind me of the illustrations by the great animation director Morimoto Koji.
Interestingly enough, in the written interview found in the book, Emma reveals that she only started drawing professionally after she quit her job as a hospital staff, some time in 2006. The illustrations she posted online quickly gained attention and when she first received an email from a client for a commission she was certain it was a scam email or a joke. I guess some people are just born to draw. 😛
( below ) A section near the end of the book lists a full catalogue of her published illustrations, some 200 in all so far.
I look forward to seeing more Emma Sky’s work in the future. This book is a great bang for your buck with its relatively big collection of art work and comes highly recommended.
