Not exactly an art book per se, famed Japanese illustrator/manga/concept artist Katsuya Terada’s ( Monkey King, RakugaKing ) new book A Drawing Life is actually a compilation of online interviews/sketches that the artist did for Japanese publisher PIE books ( see this older post ).
The interviews are pretty in-depth and covers a wide range of topics including Terada-san’s working methods, discussions of his doodles and sketches, his wishlist for an ideal hardware set-up, experiences of his recent time spent in the U.S and much more. Peppered between the lengthy written interviews are plenty of sketches and illustrations, all tasty stuff, and now made available in this tankobon.
A lengthy, insightful interview with Katsuya Terada, and lots of accompanying sketches and illustrations. Recommended.

Wish i could read japanese.
Can only wonder what i’m missing.
Pie put up an English translation for the
commentary in his 10 year retrospective,
so i’m crossing everything they’d do the same.
As always, Terada’s drawings are a pleasure.

Don/mfon – Haven’t had time to read much myself, but I certainly don’t mind an English edition too !

I really wish his books came in larger sizes. Those tiny sizes makes it hard to really appreciate the details that goes into his stuff. The 10 year retrospective in my opinion should’ve been done in a larger format. It has plenty of amazing art just ruined due to it’s size. The best format in my opinion would be something akin to Takayuki Takeya’s artbook. That book is delicious, absolutely fantastic. Terada should release more in those sizes. Although his Rakugaking book was also perfect.
