The Wes Anderson Archive - Criterion Collection 4K Blu-ray

Wes Anderson’s first ten features represent twenty-five years of irrepressible creativity, an ongoing ode to outsiders and quixotic dreamers, and a world unto themselves, graced with a mischievous wit and a current of existential melancholy that flows through every captivating frame. This momentous twenty-disc collector’s set includes new 4K masters of the films, over twenty-five hours of special features, and ten illustrated books, presented in a deluxe clothbound edition.

Here are some pictures of the most splendid set; the hallmark of Criterion’s physical media releases have always been their excellent design, and this box-set exemplifies exactly that.

I’ve always been a big fan of Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) and have been waiting ( and hoping ) for a very long time for a 4K UHD upgrade. I would have gladly settled for just this one film, but the opportunity to upgrade the director’s 25 years of filmography to 4K was not a bad notion in itself.

(image above) Lovely cover art designs from The French Dispatch ( 2021 ), perhaps a nod to the real-life cover art work for The New Yorker magazine. I highly recommend checking out the art/making of book for the film which showcase all these beautiful covers in a much bigger print size.

At the time of writing this post, I’ve so far only re-visited The Royal Tenenbaums, and the improvement in video quality from regular SD blu-ray to 4K UHD is certainly detectable, though the difference is not jarringly big. I’ve read however that for Fantastic Mr. Fox the improvement is significant, so I’m planning on watching that next.

I’m not entirely sure if the extras and making of features that comes with each film are identical to the existing standalone releases or have been appended as well; I’ll report back if this is the case at a later time.

All in all, this is a fantastic box-set that will certainly delight Wes Anderson fans, and comes highly recommended.

Oh my goodness, you bought the big set! A little out of my price range, but I did get the recent standalone 4K release of Isle of Dogs, which included the cover by Katsuhiro Otomo! Not exactly the pairing I expected with Wes Anderson, but still welcome. (it also came with a poster)

I was very happy with the fact that they included the feature length animatic as a bonus feature, that is always valuable reference material to have on hand!

Now that is a collection! I love the packaging design and the choice of colors — pretty incredible to look at on its own, before watching a single disc.

I am woefully behind on watching Wes Anderson’s films. It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for a long time but just haven’t done so yet. Maybe it will be one of my resolutions for 2026.

I’m also behind on his movies. Last one I saw was Grand Budapest. Seems like after that the fanfare with which his movies were met has been on the decline? Or could be I’m just more disconnected from the medium than I used to be a decade ago?

Coffee – Oh damn looks like I’ll miss out on the Otomo poster if I don’t get the standalone release for Isle Of Dogs, pity ! And yeah as you mentioned, the feature length animatic is definitely great reference material.

Chris – Indeed, the whole package is very well designed and the physical quality is fantastic as well. Personally for me I do believe there is such a thing as ‘Wes Anderson fatigue’ haha, so I do have to be in a certain mood when I want to watch his films.

Chris James – Yeah, Grand Budapest is one that I like more than some of his other works. I enjoyed his latest, THe Phoenician Scheme as well. Just as I was discussing with Chris above, for me at least his films are not ‘bingeable’, I have to be in a certain mood to enjoy them more haha.
