I love stop motion animation, and I love Wes Anderson’s films, so I knew I was in for a delightful treat with his take on Roald Dahl’s classic novel Fantastic Mr Fox. This lavish, beautiful book takes you on an insightful journey into the art and making of the film.
(above) This emblematic illustration for the opening sequence sets up the look of the film wonderfully. It’d also make a great piece of wall art any day; if only I have that real estate at home.
The entire book is choked full of production art work, concept sketches, photographs of miniature set pieces, the works, not unlike taking an immersive virtual tour of the actual set.
(above right) A painted sculpture of Ash. Can Hot Toys make one for us too, pretty please ?
(above) Wes Anderson crafts the most interesting and intriguing characters in his films, but also pays equal attention to the set that surrounds ( and define ) them. A stop motion film like Mr Fox seems like the perfect opportunity ( and playground ) to take that to the next level, creating unbelievably intricate and lavish miniature sets for the characters to inhabit.
This is not just a coffee table book – its a necessary companion to the blu-ray, which I too, must recommend, if you’re fan of the film.

Loved the visual feast this movie offered, but I found something about it a bit hallow and not as funny as I had hoped.
God, I loved this book as a kid.

The most impressive thing about this movie (other then the incredible amount of time to animate everything) is, as you pointed out, the set design. The attention to detail in every single set piece is astounding. They really bring the characters and their world to life.
