I’ve been immersing myself in the trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film Interstellar –
In many ways, the film is similar in setup to Robert Zemeckis’s Contact, one of my all time favourite films. The element of space/time travel, actor Matthew McConaughey stars, and in both films the stories are based on the ideas of preeminent scientists ( Carl Sagan in Contact, and Kip Thorne in Interstellar ).
Fact : A long, long into the future, the dwindling energy of our sun will cause it to expand into a red giant, cooking the earth and its inhabitants alive. Provided we haven’t yet destroyed ourselves, interstellar travel is indeed the only way our species will survive.
Cinematic side note : I’ve waxed lyrical about this before, but somewhere out there is an immensely skilled editor cutting the trailers for Christopher Nolan’s films. His/her cinematic modus operandi is simple, yet highly effective – establish the basic premise of the story, introduce the main characters, and then outline the conflict/motivation of the protagonists. Rinse and repeat.
The visual and aural elements crescendos and at the end of the trailer the narrative draws you in completely, at the same time feeling the presence of a universe that is much bigger than yourself. Ok, not the last part.
For a sweet taste of what I’m saying, watch the trailers for Dark Knight Rises and Inception below :
Cinematic artistry at its best. :]
