Just like fashion, I know nothing about the aesthetics of hair styling, but I’m always intrigued by how dramatically it can alter the look and appearance of a person – an important aspect during character design.

Hair : Fashion And Fantasy tackles this subject academically and examines the history and culture of hair fashion, delving into styles like braids, curls, chignons, short crops, each replete with visual references from both archival imagery and more contemporary sources – the result is a book that is both educational and inspiring.

(above left) Any references made to art work by one of my favourite artists John William Waterhouse is always welcomed; here the topic under discussion is loose and free flowing hair styles, as embodied by the nymphs in Waterhouse’s painting.

(below right) Farrah Fawcett was before my time, but the hair style she wore “The Farrah Flip” is an icon of femininity and freedom even today.

(above left) The elaborate and ornate hairstyle of Princess Amidala in Star Wars Episode I was strongly influenced by the traditional look wore by Japanese & Mongolian royalty.
