TOHO has just realized the first trailer for the upcoming kaiju movie Godzilla Minus One, check it out below –
Set in post WWII Japan, the premise seems to harken back to the first original Godzilla film made in 1954. While Godzilla has always been pretty popular in Japan, it has definitely seen a stronger resurgence in global popularity after the release of Hideaki Anno’s Shin-Godzilla as well as Hollywood’s Monsterverse films.
Minus One seems completely unrelated to all recent films and exists in a separate cinematic universe of its own. With the premise of the WWII setting, any use of futuristic weapons to fight Godzilla would likely be missing, so it would be interesting to see how the film portrays the fight on the side of the humans.

As someone working in the VFX industry, I was hoping to find out which studio is charged with the visual effects for this film, but no credits are listed either on the film’s Japanese wikipedia page or IMDB. That said, the director Takashi Yamazaki is a visual effects supervisor has affiliations with Shirogumi, one of Japan’s largest VFX houses, so it could be that they are the studio behind the film.
Godzilla Minus One will release domestically in Japan on Dec 1st, 2023.

With GODZILLA MINUS ONE and the upcoming AppleTV+ series MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS (which will feature the Monsterverse’s Godzilla), as well as NetFlix’s GAMERA anime, it’s a great time to be a kaiju fan.
And when MINUS ONE hits the US in December, I will definitely check it out.
