Witchfinder Omnibus Volume 2 Graphic Novel Review

Sir Edward Grey, also known as the Witchfinder was an occult/paranormal investigator that lived during the 19th century. He is one of the supporting characters in Mike Mignola’s Hellboy universe, and have on multiple occasions aided Hellboy during times of need with his considerable occult powers and knowledge.

Witchfinder can be considered a prequel/spin-off of Hellboy, covering Sir Edward Grey’s missions and adventures during his time as a mortal. This second omnibus ( read my review for Vol 1 here ) collects Witchfinder TPB volumes 4-6, complete with an extensive sketchbook section. The stories feature the writing of Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson, with art from Ben Stenbeck, D’Israeli, and Christopher Mitten and stunning colors from Michelle Madsen and Dave Stewart.

Book Synopsis – Discover a nest of vampires, brave a technological “gate” to another realm, and track down the truth behind Jack the Ripper in this collection of three intense adventures of Sir Edward Grey. As the Queen’s personal “Witchfinder,” Grey continues to pursue the occult goings on in London and beyond. But this time the events he encounters—and the things he learns—will lead him to question his very future.

(above & below) The sketchbook section included with most of the omnibus volumes from the Mignolaverse ( BPRD, Lobster Johnson ) is something I always look forward to reading, for they reveal the extensive prep work and studies that the artists have to take on in order to complete the comics. The many posters included are also a real treat.

Frequent readers of this blog will know that I love Hellboy, BPRD and the entire “Mignolaverse”, so any additional stories that help expand the mythology of the Hellboy universe is always highly welcomed. Witchfinder provides great backstory to the character Sir Edward Grey, and makes for great reading. This is a much welcomed addition to Volume 1 and comes recommended.
