Nagano Tsuyoshi is a Japanese illustrator who has contributed art work for the hugely popular turn-based strategy video games like Nobunaga’s Ambition and Sangokushi ( Romance Of The 3 Kingdoms ). His realistic but stylized illustrations of the titular characters that appear in these stories capture your imagination with their commanding presence and aura.

This is his first published art book, featuring a huge collection of his highly detailed illustrations that include warriors and generals from the above mentioned games, as well as 3 instructional, step by step illustration tutorials.

(above) Nagano-san lists some of the artists that have influenced his drawing style – the great J.C Leyendecker, Bob Peak as well as Drew Struzan.

I’ve always found Nagano Tsuyoshi’s illustrations to be highly attractive but it has been hard to enjoy his body of work because he has never published a proper art book – until now. This volume is a perfect collection of his illustrations and comes highly recommended.

I also recommend the art books of two other Japanese artists who have illustrated themes on period Japan / China – Ohrai Noriyoshi and Kimiya Masago.
