The Art And Soul Of Dune explores in detail the stunning concept art work created during the making of Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel Dune. This huge and heavy hardcover volume is packed from cover to cover with key visdev and concept drawings, from character designs for the primary characters like Paul Atreides, Lady Jessica and Baron Vladimir Harkonnen to the impressionable machines and aircrafts seen on Arrakis like the hulking spice harvesters or the sleek and aerodynamic Ornithopters. I personally find the costume and weapon designs for the Emperor’s elite fighting troops Sardaukar and the Arrakis natives Fremen to be particularly interesting.
The book is written by Dune executive producer Tanya Lapointe, who also covered the 2 art books ( Art And Soul Of Blade Runner 2049 and Blade Runner 2049 – Interlinked – The Art ) for Denis Villeneuve’s highly acclaimed Bladerunner 2049. The book also features exclusive interviews with key members of the cast and crew, including Denis Villeneuve, Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, and many more, delivering a uniquely candid account of the hugely ambitious international shoot.
This 240 paged volume is light on the on-set photography/pictures and heavy on actual concept art pieces, something I always prefer for these “art of” books.

I thoroughly enjoyed Denis Villeneuve’s cinematic rendition of Dune; my only regret was that I was unable to enjoy the epic scale and scope of this sweeping sci-fi film at an IMAX screening due to the disruptions caused by the pandemic. The silver lining is the upcoming 4K UHD blu-ray release of the movie, and I am certain I will circle back to this art book before and after my viewing just to admire and immerse in the splendid concept art that was created during the making of this sci-fi epic. Recommended.

Soooo want this…but soooo want the space at home to put it!
Thanks for another great review. DUNE was one of my favorite films of 2021 and I loved the designs in the film. This is certainly worth picking up just to see how they came up with them.
(I’m wondering what they’ll come up with for Villenueve’s planned adaptation of RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA….)
