Tsumamigui Bento (つまみぐい弁当) is a sumptuously illustrated food manga by Osaka based illustrator Ishiyama Azusa (イシヤマアズサ). The author shares with the reader recipes for 14 mouth-watering bento ( Japanese lunchbox ) sets through her gorgeously drawn manga, with illustrations so eye-poppingly colorful and attractive you can almost smell the aroma of the cuisine emanating from the pages.
The Japanese word “tsumamigui” has a dual meaning attached to it; one describing the action of eating with one’s fingers, and also the act of snitching food; ie snatching food and eating it before a meal proper, both of which are whimsically captured on the cover illustration of the comic.
(above) The book jacket folds out into a wider illustration, just lovely.
Ishiyama Azusa’s wonderful illustrations make me want to cook up a storm as well as level up my culinary skills, especially for Japanese cuisine. And makes me terribly hungry too, of course. She has published a couple of other food manga/books ( see purchase links below ) which I am completely obliged to acquire and review in the near future. This manga gets my highest recommendations.
