Transformers Vol. 1: Robots in Disguise Comic Review

I’ve been seeing and reading quite a good many things about the excellent work of American comic artist Daniel Warren Johnson on my twitter stream, and so I decided to check out what titles he has released that I’ll be able to collect, and this volume came up. It so happened that around the same time the animated film Transformers One ( with animation by ILM / Industrial Light And Magic ) was been released, and with me been a fan of the Transformers G1 animation series, I knew I had this pick this up for review.

Daniel Warren Johnson’s art work is wonderfully detailed and it is greatly complimented by the vivid and vibrant colors by Mike Spicer, making the panels pop with frenetic, dizzying energy. One of the reasons why I like Daniel’s art work is also because his drawing style is somewhat similar to another comic artist that I really like; James Harren ( BPRD, UltraMega ), particularly they way both artists depicts motion and movement.

Comic synopsis –
“In a world dominated by plenty of corporate comics, this Transformers title is a muscle car built in neighborhood garage.” – The Hollywood Reporter

THE TRANSFORMERS JOIN THE ENERGON UNIVERSE!

Optimus Prime was supposed to have led the Autobots to victory. Instead, the fate of Cybertron is unknown, and his allies have crash-landed far from home, alongside their enemies—the Decepticons. As these titanic forces renew their war on Earth, one thing is immediately clear: the planet will never be the same. New alliances are struck. Battle lines are redrawn. And humanity’s only hope of survival is Optimus Prime.

Superstar creator Daniel Warren Johnson (Do a Powerbomb, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth), alongside showrunner Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible), re-imagines Hasbro’s robots in disguise for a brand-new generation.

Daniel Warren Johnson is a Chicago-based comic book writer, artist, and illustrated by. He’s worked on titles for most major publishers, including Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and Image. His current series with Skybound/Image Comics is EXTREMITY, a sci-fi/fantasy title he is writing and drawing, and continues to update his webcomic Space-Mullet in his spare time.

The splendid art work made this comic an engrossing read and I finished it quickly in one sitting, so I’m going to have to pick up Vol 2 & 3 as well. I’m excited to further discover other comic titles that Daniel Warren Johnson has contributed to as well. Recommended.

It seems that this volume is a worldwide phenomenon! even in Italy the first volume was presented with great fanfare!
it’s not my genre though.
If you want to try other works by Daniel Warren Johnson, I read EXTREMITY.
Completely written and illustrated by him. It’s a nice story, very action and splatter, very exciting. But in general the story is very simple. Maybe he works better as an illustrator than as a screenwriter.
