Blade Runner 2049 - The Storyboards Book Review

Having just re-visited Denis Villeneuve’s Bladerunner 2049 (2017) recently, I’ve come to realize just how much I like it and it is certainly one of my favorite sci-fi films of recent years. This also reminded me that I had actually picked up the storyboard book quite a while back but had never gotten around to review it, so here we are !

Storyboards can be likened to the blueprints for a movie, and studying the storyboards can be highly informative in learning about the creative and cinematic motivations of the director/filmmakers behind the film. Also, storyboards do not need to be extremely well or intricately drawn so long as they serve to illustrate the director’s vision/instructions, but I think we are lucky in this case that the storyboards for 2049 are really detailed, which is always welcomed.

Book synopsis – Blade Runner 2049: The Storyboards is the only book presenting all of the storyboards from the film.

In 1982, film audiences experienced a bold new depiction of the future with the ground-breaking Blade Runner, which was fundamental in establishing the still-vibrant Cyberpunk movement. With the critically acclaimed Blade Runner 2049, director Denis Villeneuve further explored that unique “future noir” world, this time following a young blade runner whose discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former blade runner Rick Deckard–the protagonist of the first film–who’s been missing for some thirty years.

Blade Runner 2049: The Storyboards is a celebration of the rarely-seen artwork that was key in building the harsh, yet strangely beautiful, environments in the film. This remarkable book presents a fresh look at Blade Runner 2049, including scenes that were later altered or cut out entirely, along with new, in-context commentary from storyboard artists Sam Hudecki and Darryl Henley throughout.

need to open my first comment on your site by saying how much i’ve loved looking through the art book reviews in the past year or so, and appreciate all the effort put into telling us about them! because the main reason i had the motivation to actually comment is to flag a couple of typos in the opening paras here – first para opening line says ‘Dune 2049 (2017)’ and second para opening it says ‘information’ when i think you meant ‘informative’ – but again, love the site, thank you for all the work in getting all the books of gorgeous art on our radars and look forward to reading more entries!
