Tokyo Storefronts - The Artworks of Mateusz Urbanowicz Book Review 東京店構え マテウシュ・ウルバノヴィチ作品集

Mateusz Urbanowicz is a Polish illustrator based in Tokyo, Japan. He previously worked as a background artist at Comix Wave, the studio behind Shinkai Makoto’s anime films and have contributed to renowned titles like “Space Dandy” and “Your Name“. Since 2017 he has been working as a freelance artist to focus on his own original works.

This new art book by him features a gorgeous collection of watercolor art works showcasing the many charming and quaint storefronts found throughout Tokyo, with 50 storefront illustrations included. In some ways this book is similar to the Tokyo On Foot art book by Florent Chavouet, and is an excellent way to discover interesting sights and landmarks in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The bottom-line is, the illustrations and drawings are just plain beautiful to look at !

While all the illustrations found in the book are beautiful, I especially enjoy the cross-sectional reviews of some of the shops featured. Look at all the amazing detail the artist has painted ! ( image above )

The artist has also included an illustrated tour of his workspace, which I’m always deeply interested in. ( image above ). There’s also a short technical tutorial included at the end of the book.

Just recently I was at the Shinjuku Kinokuniya and Mateusz’s book was on feature at the store, nice ! ( image below )

I cannot recommend this book enough ! The added bonus is that both Japanese and English language are included, which is the exception rather than the norm for art books published in Japan. Grab this book and enjoy Mateusz Urbanowicz charming illustrations, and remember to bring it with you if you ever visit Tokyo to see some of these amazing storefronts yourself.

Hafiz – Nice, thanks for sharing the link !

There is another one pretty cool if you like Tokyo like me, this one is a photography book with an intro by Hideo Kojima himself, where the author narrates a night photosession, his process and main influences, it is a book by Liam Wong called Tokyo.
