The Second Movement – (Memories Of) Fukushima is a compilation of poems curated by renowned Japanese actress Sayuri Yoshinaga, with illustrations by veteran Ghibli background artist Kazuo Oga. The book is dedicated to the residents of Fukushima, whose lives were greatly affected by the nuclear meltdown at the plant after the devastating earthquake and tsunami that took place on 3/11/2011.
Besides her film career, Sayuri Yoshinaga has dedicated much of her time over the past 30 years reciting poems for anti-nuclear advocacy, some of which are collected in this book, with full English translations included. Coupled with Kazuo Oga’s beautiful watercolor illustrations, the book makes for a great read.
I’ve always been a big fan of Kazuo Oga’s art work, especially after visiting his amazing background art exhibition back in 2007. Besides the literary works found in this book his beautiful watercolor illustrations is good enough reason to pick this up. Recommended.
I also highly recommend Kazuo Oga/Sayuri Yoshinaga’s earlier book Second Movement – Hiroshima/Nagasaki.
