The Denno Coil Project Art Book Review

Posted By yonghow on October 26th, 2008

“これがすべての原点” ( This is the starting point of everything ) as boldly announced on the promo band of the Denno Coil Project book, a nifty collection of original ideas, unpublished concept artwork and stories by Iso Mitsuo, the director of the highly acclaimed Madhouse anime series Denno Coil. Read a little more about the background of Denno Coil and director Iso Mitsuo in this older post.

(above) I really love the subdued look of Iso Mitsuo’s watercolor sketches.

(below) Some quirky characters that never made it to the final cut.

Now that I’ve jumped onto the Blu-ray bandwagon here’s hoping Bandai Visual will release a (affordable) complete boxset in the near future.

Anyone else found Denno Coil quite a cut above most anime series released in the past few years ? (most notably in the animation, concept and story department)

You can get a copy of the book here.

I love Denno Coil. The characters are great, solid storylines and the animation quality was very high.

Denno Coil’s concept was exceptionally pulled off in the anime. I really loved it as well, it had the right dash of humor, with one of the best plots ever. It might just very well happen, and that is what makes it so interesting – because it is believable to a large extent, that it might happen in our not-so-distant future.

!!!! Thank you so very much for the pictures! I’ve asked my friend to help me get this, I should be getting it in December… 😀 I can’t wait to see it, and your pictures have just got me extremely excited! What amazing illustrations… and as a total Coil nut it’s so cool to see how the various characters came about. I don’t even have a BD player but wish they’d put out a Blu-ray box because it’s quite a waste watching it in SD.

Tragic comedy

i must say the original art style looks super different from the final product…still, it looks quite wonderful.
definately a pickup at kino!

Tragic comedy

*just to add on*
i noticed one of the omitted characters bears a very strong resemblance to Nausicaa…

Oh my.

I miss this show.

Thank you for the pictures, what a stunning book.

oh man, that was such a good show.
the animation was really well done! great buy!

I’m still watching Dennou Coil but I might say it’s one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. The cyberspace idea is just awesome. As someone said above, I don’t own a Blu-Ray player yet, but it’d be wonderful to watch this show in HD.

Even though it seems a waste, I’m probably going to buy the DVDs.
