The Electric State - Simon Stålenhag Art Book Review

Simon Stålenhag, the brilliant artist behind Tales From The Loop and Things From The Flood is back with yet another stunning art book titled The Electric State.

Set in the late 1990s, the story follows a runaway teenage girl and her small yellow toy robot as they travel west through a strange American landscape populated by the ruins of gigantic battle drones and discarded trash from the remnants of a high-tech consumerist society addicted to a virtual-reality system.

Not unlike his previous art books, the images from Electric State seemed informed and inspired by the artist’s real life experiences and memories living in the Nordic state during the 90s. Every image is eerie and haunting, evoking a strangely detached combination of awe, loneliness and nostalgia all at once.

The Electric State is every bit as delicious and fascinating as the artist’s previous titles Tales From The Loop and Things From The Flood, both of which I highly recommend.

This hardcover volume is almost a steal at $22.48 and gets my highest recommendations.

On a side note, fans of Simon Stålenhag will be thrilled to know that Amazon Studios have acquired rights for a television series based on the Tales From The Loop, with the first episode to be directed by Mark Romanek ( Never Let Me Go ). I cannot wait.
