The Dam Keeper is a lusciously illustrated children’s graphic novel by Robert Kondo and Dice Tsutsumi, co-founders of the Berkley based animation studio Tonko House. Based on the Academy Award nominated animated short of the same name, Pig, Fox and Hippo are 3 inhabitants of Sunrise Valley who must discover the mysteries of the fog that killed Pig’s mother years ago and now threaten to envelop the entire village.
I’ve been a fan of Dice Tsutsumi’s beautiful illustrations since I was introduced to his art work from his other projects like the Totoro Forest and Sketch Travel, and the Dam Keeper is filled from cover to cover with exactly that.
The Dam Keeper was written with children in mind, but readers of all ages can certainly enjoy the lush and vibrant art work by Robert Kondo and Dice Tsutsumi. Book Two and Three are available as well, and I hope to read them soon as well. Recommended.
I also suggest checking out some of Dice Tsutsumi’s earlier art projects like SketchTravel and the Totoro Forest Project.
