The Call Of Cthulhu Illustrated Novel Book Review

My knowledge and understanding of American sci-fi/horror writer H.P. Lovecraft‘s widely influential Cthulhu Mythos has always been very limited, having come across his creations through references in video games like Quake/Fallout 4 as well as Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comics.

This large format illustrated novel for his Call Of Cthulhu by Francois Baranger seemed like the perfect medium/format for me to learn more about it without having to actually read his books (yet), and the beautiful art work is a big plus as well.

Book synopsis – Boston, 1926. Francis Thurston goes through documents left behind by his grandfather’s brother, recently deceased under mysterious circumstances. He soon discovers the existence of a cult that worships ancient and unspeakable horrors. Mysterious murders, blood rituals in the depths of the Louisiana swamps, artists who descend into insanity after nightmarish visions, and a Cyclopean city that rises from the sea. Step by step, Thurston realizes that his relative’s research got too close to the truth. In the shadows, there are those who want to wake the sleeping god Cthulhu in order to spread madness and destruction over the entire world. The stars are right. Is the end near?

H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu, first published in 1928, is one of the greatest classics of American horror literature. Cthulhu himself, dreaming and waiting at the bottom of the sea, became a symbol for the entire mythology that Lovecraft created.

François Baranger, an illustrator who has previously worked in film and games, was fascinated early on by Lovecraft’s creatures and visions which populated the darkest recesses of fantasy. In this book, he has taken on the work of illustrating Lovecraft’s most iconic novel.

PS : Youtube flip-through video – I am currently traveling and am unable to upload my flip-through video for this book due to technical difficulties. I will upload it once I return to Vancouver. Thank you for the understanding !

The moody illustrations by artist François Baranger paints a vivid and imaginative picture of Lovecraft’s story. I plan to pick up the other Lovecraft illustrated novels in the series like At The Mountains Of Madness and The Dunwich Horrors as well. Recommended.

DISTRAKT

Got to check this out!

You should have a check to the manga comics of GOU TANABE: he is drawing all the novels of Lovecraft, taking a lot of care to convey the anxiety and terror of the original stories.
