A superheroine created by Forrest J Ackerman and comic book artist Trina Robbins in 1969 for Warren Publishing’s black-and-white horror comics magazine, the sexy Vampirella has gained a huge following over the decades and remains popular to this day.
The Art of Vampirella : The Warren Years features every image to grace the cover of the Vampirella magazine from issue #1 through #112 and the 1972 Annual, showcasing iconic art work by artists like Frank Frazetta, Sanjulian, Enrich, Jeffrey Jones, Ken Kelly and more. The original art work are presented pristine and raw, with no logos, cover type or design elements layered over, which makes for excellent appreciation.
(above) Vampirella illustration by Enrich. This art work was also used as the cover for the art book Masters Of Spanish Comic Art, which I highly recommend.
(above and below) Strong use of the painting technique Chiaroscuro in these two illustrations; the one below almost feels like a painting by Georges de La Tour.
A superb hard cover volume collecting some of the very best Vampirella art work ever created. I also recommend checking out the art books Masters Of Spanish Comic Art, which features art work by Enrich, and also The Art Of Jose Gonzalez, who has painted some stunning images of Vampirella.
