Kaneko Yuji (金子雄司) is a veteran background artist and art director at Japanese animation art studio Aojashin (青写真). This sumptuous 256 pages art book showcases his extensive background art portfolio that includes work for titles like Kill La Kill, Ranking of Kings, Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island, Patlabor Reboot ( animated short ), POWER PLANT No.33 and many many more.

The projects undertaken by Aojashin seems to have a strong focused on sci-fi themes, and the resulting work and style shows more similarity to Kimura Shinji’s work ( like Tekkon Kinkreet ) rather than say Kazuo Oga, the latter whom focuses more on nature landscapes.

There’s a whole lot more content in the book that my few preview images can do justice to ( I had a hard time picking just those that I feel packed more punch and there’s too many to choose from ); just like most other anime art books the landscape format is perfect for showcasing and preserving the original aspect ratio of the background plates.

A really splendid collection of beautiful background art and one more book to add to my growing collection. I’ve actually not seen most of the anime titles that are featured in this book but I’m definitely tempted to find out more now. This comes recommended.
