The Art of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Book Review

The concluding film to the Star Wars Skywalker Saga, The Rise of Skywalker is a spellbinding visual fest with spectacular VFX conjured up by the digital wizards at Industrial Light & Magic. The story and narrative treatment is a departure from previous films, which left dedicated fans divided, but I was never a big enough follower of the franchise to be troubled, and instead spent my time just marveling at the beautiful world the filmmakers created.

Just like the previous two Art Of Star Wars books for The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, this volume features a dizzying collection of astounding concept art created by the amazing art team headed by Lucasfilm creative director Doug Chiang. Included are character designs and costume sketches, creature, environment and ship designs, storyboards and much more.

(above) The manner in which Kylo Ren repairs his broken helmet is a reference to the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is mended in the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. The repaired item can often be seen as more aesthetically pleasing than the original, perfect form.

Going out with a bang, this volume is a spectacular showcase of the immense creative talents of the concept artists working at Lucasfilm, and I particularly enjoy the huge gamut of character and creature designs conjured up for the Star Wars universe. Now you may or may not have enjoyed the film, but the concept art work is pure gold. My highest recommendations.

I also highly recommend the The Rise of Skywalker The Visual Dictionary, with delightful cross-section illustrations.

It’s unfortunate seeing such fantastic art direction, elaborate thinking and artists knocking themselves out making concepts for such an incoherent, laughable, and maddening script.
It *did* look amazing, however.

Reginald Allouchery

The most expensive failure I have ever seen, and I am a star wars fan. The movie is a living demonstration that you can have the most amazing special effects and art direction, without a coherent script, the result will be an unmitigated disaster. It felt like watching two hours of video game cutscenes. But not in a good way. The art design, as always, is out of this world.

Scott/Reginald – Much agreed. Unfortunately, a wasted opportunity for a truly great Starwars film IMHO.
