Death Stranding 2 : On the Beach is the sequel to the highly acclaimed Death Stranding (2019) action-adventure game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Check out my art book review for the first game here.

Game director Hideo Kojima, concept artist Yoji Shinkawa and his entire art team took the winning elements of the original and expanded it in all the best ways; On The Beach is a simply bigger and better follow-up in every aspect.

This 240 pages hardcover art book showcases all of these achievements, with stunning visual development ( visdev ) pieces created by lead concept artist Yoji Shinkawa and his team that runs the whole gamut from character and costume designs, weapons and props, creature designs, vehicles, environments, structures and more.

All the encompassing design elements are just beautifully thought out, and while the quality is exemplary for every asset category, I am particularly delighted by the costume designs as well as the tech/gear designs; sleek yet functional, and extremely pleasing in visual aesthetics. I am absolutely convinced that Yoji Shinkawa would have been a killer costume/fashion designer if he had ventured into that field.

At the time of writing this post, I have already rolled credits on the main story of the game and I’m working toward my Platinum trophy award. I have thoroughly enjoyed Death Stranding 2 : On The Beach and the amazing visual designs played no small part in the immersion. This art book is the absolute best way to explore all these stunning concept art and comes very highly recommended.

P.S. I do have one small nitpick; I do wish the publishers had included the brilliant poster for the game illustrated by Pablo Uchida in the book as well !

Also, if you’re a fan of Yoji Shinkawa’s design work, I highly recommend this 2024 issue of the Hobby Japan Extra magazine with a splendid coverage of his design portfolio.
