James Cameron’s Avatar The Way Of Water is the most visually astounding film I’ve seen in recent years, bar none. The sheer amount of in-depth world-building is just staggering in order to create a universe of such fidelity and realism, and high-quality concept art is the cornerstone of such an endeavor.

This 256 pages hardcover volume takes a deep dive into these stunning concept art pieces, with vivid illustrations depicting the lush and azure oceans of Pandora as well as its many creature inhabitants. There are also costumes and creature designs for the Na’vi, including the Metkayina clan that has evolved to a partly aquatic life. I also appreciate the extensive coverage of RDA and their human invaders, including all the super high tech hardware, vehicles, aircrafts, ships, exo-suits, mecha, weapons and more.

Art of Avatar: The Way of Water is produced in collaboration with James Cameron’s production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, and Twentieth Century Film, and comes with a foreword by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez ( Alita : Battle Angel ).

(above left) This aerial view of the RDA’s base of operations brings to mind the photography of Benjamin Grant, and is a stark reminder of how human activities can vastly alter the natural landscape.

A fantastic companion to what is surely one of the most impressive visual spectacles in recent cinematic history. Immersing yourself in these concept art pieces will certainly add to an even more satisfying viewing experience; here’s hoping the 4K UHD of the film comes out soon ! Highly recommended.
