The much awaited sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s highly acclaimed epic sci-fi film Dune delivered, and then some, upping the stakes and momentum of the on-going story with breathtaking and often sweeping set action pieces. I seldom visit the cinemas these days, especially after the pandemic but I felt this movie was worth the effort, and was thoroughly rewarded by the experience.
This art and making of book for Dune : Part Two follows the same format as the first book that I reviewed back in 2022, and showcases a combination of concept art pieces as well as on-set photography. Some included concept art pieces include machine designs for the smuggler harvester, Arrakis Fedaykin warriors costume design, environment designs for the Imperial capital Kaitain, character design for the menacing Feyd Rautha and many more. I was particularly interested in the write-up and concept art pieces for the Harkonnen harvester attack, a pivotal scene in the film as Paul proves his mettle amongst the Fremen as well as Chani.
Book synopsis – Journey into the making of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two and discover the incredible creative process that brought this new installment to life.
The Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two captures the breathtaking behind-the-scenes journey behind the making of Dune: Part Two, the second film in director Denis Villeneuve’s six-time Oscar-winning film adaptation of author Frank Herbert’s science fiction classic.
Written by Dune: Part Two producer Tanya Lapointe (p.g.a.), this visually dazzling exploration of the filmmaking process gives unparalleled insight into the project’s genesis—from its striking environmental designs to its intricate costume concepts and landmark digital effects. The Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two also features exclusive interviews with key members of the cast and crew, including Denis Villeneuve, production designer Patrice Vermette, and many more, delivering a uniquely candid account of the hugely ambitious international shoot.
Showcasing Villeneuve’s visionary approach, The Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two is an essential companion to the director’s latest masterpiece.
The Art And Soul of Dune : Part Two serves as an excellent companion to the equally fantastic first volume, with a fantastic show case of both concept art pieces and on-set/behind the scenes photography.
By comparison, the first book does seem to offer up a bigger ratio of concept art pieces vs photographs, but the first movie had so much more to establish in terms of world-building as we are shown Arrakis for the very first time, so take that into account. All this said, this book still comes recommended. Next up, Dune : Messiah.
Needless to say, but I’m always waiting for an opportune moment to pick up the 4K UHD release of the movie.
