This oversized hardcover volume documents the art and making of director Denis Villeneuve’s sequel to the groundbreaking sci-fi film Bladerunner, Blade Runner 2049. The book is written by journalist Tanya Lapointe, who shadowed the creative/film crew over the 2 years of production as she documented their work.
Included in the book are a good balance of concept art, storyboards, behind-the-scenes photography, and production stills, plus annotations and notes from the director and creative crew. Measuring a good 14.6 x 11.6 inches, it is quite a bit bigger than your usual art of book and really shows off the visual content.
(above & below) Artists working on miniatures for key structures and buildings featured in the film, including the LAPD monolith. With the wide advent of CG used for vfx these days miniatures is a welcome sight.
(above) The sweeping aerial shots are similar to some seen in the director’s earlier film, Sicario, both shot by the renowned director of photography Roger Deakins. I love his work.
(below) Concept art for K’s Spinner vehicle. Japanese concept artist Kouji Tajima ( see his art book here ) was also involved in the designs for some of these.
(below) Renowned concept artist Syd Mead also contributed to some of the designs for the Las Vegas set. I highly recommend checking out his art book The Movie Art of Syd Mead: Visual Futurist.
Blade Runner 2049 is certainly one of my favourite films of 2017. There is so much visual artistry and depth to the storytelling, and this book is a great way to learn more about the incredible work that the creative crew put in when making the film. Highly recommended.

Gorgeous film. I don’t quite love it as much as other people do, but it lingered in my head and I look forward to watching it again on bluray.
