Although his name is lesser known to international audiences as compared to Evangelion director Hideaki Anno, Shinji Higuchi (樋口真嗣) is one of the foremost directorial talents in the tokusatsu ( special effects ) genre of movies, and as a professional storyboard artist, he has also boarded many of films he directed/co-directed, including more recent titles like Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman.
This 640 pages hardcover volume is a showcase of his storyboards and sketches work, and includes the aforementioned Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman as well as Attack On Titan ( live-action ), Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo and Saiyuki.
Shinji Higuchi’s talent as a skilled storyboard artist is clearly manifest in his highly detailed and visually instructive drawings. Technically speaking, storyboards are by and large a pre-production tool and detailed drawings are not required, but it is always a treat when they are meticulously drawn, like the ones by Katsuhiro Otomo and Hayao Miyazaki.
Also included at the end of this book is a lengthy interview with Higuchi written in both Japanese and English, and is a fantastic source of information with regards to his work and creative thought processes.
A marvelous collection of superbly drawn storyboards from such highly acclaimed tokusatsu films like Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman, coupled with an informative and illuminative interview with Shinji Higuchi. Recommended.
