SAMURA is a full color manga illustrated by the Japanese artist who goes by the handle Oku (おく). I first came across the artist’s work in ILLUSTRATION 2021 and 2022, and his rich rendering style and astute use of colors caught my attention.

SAMURA is a jidaigeki ( Japanese period ) and mythology manga piece, featuring familiar creatures from Japanese folklore like dragons, tengu and oni ( Japanese demons ). While I’ve yet to read the entire comic in full, the mood seems to swing from light-hearted, comical moments at times to more serious, sombre tones as well.

As I cannot really comment on the quality of the story and writing before reading the the manga in full, my observations are purely based on the quality of the art work, which is by all accounts splendid, and I personally really enjoy the artist’s style of illustration.

Published in February 2022, this manga was actually buried under a big pile of art books and so I kinda forgot about it completely for a while. I’m going to find some time to read the manga in full, but if you’re like me and enjoy the artist’s beautiful illustrations, the relatively low price point make this an easy one to pick up. Recommended.
