Matsuo Hiromi (マツオヒロミ) is a Japanese illustrator with a penchant for “retro-modern” themes; often beautiful women adorned in lush, extravagant costumes. I first introduced his work in the June 2017 Illustration magazine.
His style of illustration, in particular the color palette and composition reminds me at times the work of Robert McGinnis. Matsuo Hiromi is himself a fan of Kamimura Kazuo and Italian artist Guido Crepax.
This new art book titled Rondo is a fictional fashion magazine created by the artist, celebrating 100 years of publications. The book is packed full of beautifully illustrated fashion pieces, from traditional Japanese costumes to Western outfits and get-ups, all chic and most definitely stylish. Now I might know next to nothing about women’s fashion, but I do recognize good style when I see it, and this book is spilling with it.
Now there are some overlapping material if you have purchased the 2017 art book as well ( read my review ), but there are enough illustrations in this new book to warrant a purchase, especially at the relatively low price-point. Recommended.
Matsuo Hiromi has also published several other art books ( see Amazon purchase links below ), some of which I hope to pick up for review at a later time.
