Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth : Inside the Creation of a Modern Fairy Tale is a sumptuous dive into art and making of the film, winner of 3 Academy Awards ( cinematography, art direction and make-up ) in 2007.
The entire book is filled to the brim with beautiful concept art, set and character design sketches, storyboards, production stills and much more. Many of the art pieces included are presented like pasted on notes in a journal/sketchbook, giving the book a personal, hand-crafted feel that really adds to the read.
I’m thoroughly blown away by the immense amount of art work and background research that went into the making of this film, all which are presented in stunning quality here. I’ve not watched the film for a while but it’s a perfect opportunity for me to re-visit it on my copy of Trilogía de Guillermo del Toro. This book gets my highest recommendations.
I also highly recommend another book on Guillermo del Toro – Cabinet Of Curiosities, featuring his sketches.

Fantastic collection of art. Very impressive production. I’ve been meaning to revisit the movie as well, I watched The Spirit of the Beehive somewhat recently and it reminded me of Pan’s Labyrinth. I think I like Spirit of the Beehive more but my memory of Pan’s Labyrinth has partially faded.
