The Art Of Luca Book Review

I enjoyed Disney/Pixar’s animated film Luca very much, largely in part because I’ve been a huge fan of the director Enrico Casarosa’s art work for the longest time; dating back some 13 years ago when I was still living in Tokyo and we were doing art book exchanges. The staccato, stop-motion like animation style and visual design of the film is clearly a tribute to the animated films of Aardman as well as Studio Ghibli, both of which I am big fans of.

This sumptuous 176 pages hardcover volume serves up a most splendid collection of visual development and concept art for the film, running the gamut from environment, props to character designs as well as select storyboards and colorscripts; the works. The soft, painterly look and charm of the finished film can certainly be traced back to the many watercolor illustrations and concept art painted by the director Enrico Casarosa, all of them just lovely to look at and admire.

Technically brilliant as they are, I’ve not particularly enjoyed most of Pixar’s recent films personally; Soul was quite the exceptional, but with Luca Pixar seems to have gotten back the magic, and I can’t wait to re-visit this film again on 4K UHD soon. This art book is a perfect companion to the film and gets my highest recommendations.

I liked LUCA, as did my nephews. The artbook looks great! I’m also glad that this was the first Pixar film that a buddy of mine from my days at the Animation Collective in NYC worked on; it was nice to see his name in the credits.
