Out & About In Singapore is a color pencil illustrated picture book by local artist William Sim, and written by Melanie Lee. Sort of a cross between an illustrated travelogue and light history book, the vibrant and beautifully drawn images highlight some of the most iconic spots of Singapore, complimented by snippets of historical context and trivia. As a born and bred Singaporean myself, these lovely illustrations resonate strongly and also make me miss home quite a bit now that I’m based in Vancouver.
In a way, the choice of media ( color pencils ) and also art style remind me of yet another beautifully illustrated travelogue, Tokyo On Foot.
(above & below) As a melting pot of many different cultures ( Chinese, Malay, Indian & colonial British ), the architecture of the city also reflect this rich history. These landmarks are beautiful realized by the artist William Sim’s colorful and vibrant illustrations.
Out & About In Singapore is not only a wonderfully illustrated travelogue but serves up some interesting history and trivia of the tiny island state as well. For me, it’s a little taste of home. Recommended.
If you want to learn or read more about Singapore through beautiful illustrations, I also recommend Scenes Of Singapore by Foo Kwee Horng.
