As one of the most popular and recognizable villain/anti-hero characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe ( MCU ), Loki ( played with great relish and charm by English actor Tom Hiddleston ) finally met his true demise at the hands of Thanos, but Marvel Studios is smart not to retire such a fantastic character but instead have him appear in his own series on Disney+.
Leveraging on the boundless possibilities offered up by the premise of the multiverse, the series conjures up countless Loki variants inhabiting a thousand different worlds, and these concept art and character designs are fully explored in this art book. The biggest highlight is of course the wide gamut of character and costume designs for the many Loki variants; even an alligator Loki, but I’m am also a big fan of the art direction and set design created for the TVA ( Time Variance Authority ) the insidious organization tasked in keeping the multiverse timeline in check.
The hulking and monolithic structures of the TVA construct quickly brings to mind Brutalist architecture, something in common with the designs of the beautiful Playstation video game CONTROL, whom I am a big fan.
Book synopsis – Picking up immediately after Loki steals the Tesseract (again), he finds himself called before the Time Variance Authority, a bureaucratic organization that exists outside of time and space, forced to answer for his crimes against the timeline and given a choice: face deletion from reality or assist in catching an even greater threat. Follow the god of chaos through exclusive concept art and behind the scenes interviews in this keepsake art book.
(above & below) The hulking halls and monolithic structures of the TVA, visual motifs often associated with Brutalism architecture. If you are fascinated by set designs as such, I highly recommend checking out the art book for the Playstation video game CONTROL.
(above) Quite possibly my favorite Loki variant, the visual effects for alligator Loki is bought to life by ILM ( Industrial Light & Magic ). See the making of here.
Loki is quite the fun series and I definitely enjoyed it, especially for its great art direction, costume and set design. This art book is a splendid exploration of all the fantastic concept art created for the series and comes recommended.
