“A Long Season” (永い季節) is the first published art book by Josee Shimazaki / しまざきジョゼ, an artist/illustrator and graduate of Nagoya Art University. After graduation, the artist worked at a design firm for 4 years before venturing out to take on freelance illustration jobs and is also a lecturer at the art university of Kyoto.
Japanese illustration books that feature artists depicting idyllic, albeit mundane scenes in every day life are pretty common, but Josee’s take rose above the usual offerings and caught my eye because of the artist’s great eye for pleasing aesthetics and beautiful compositions. In some ways, Josee’s style of illustration remind me of yet another great Japanese illustrator whom I’m also a big fan of, the amazing Tadahiro Uesugi (上杉 忠弘).
Released by PIE International, the Japanese publishing house has established itself as a great curator of new artists and illustrators, and Josee Shimazaki is the one of the latest to join the collection.
160 pages of beautiful, therapeutic illustrations to soothe the eye and mind. I look forward to discovering more of the artist’s works in the future, and this book comes recommended.
